Intern, Center for Innovation, Trade, and Strategy

The National Bureau of Asian Research is seeking an Intern for the Center for Innovation, Trade, and Strategy to provide research, communication, event planning, and administrative support for Trade Center projects. This opportunity allows the individual to develop experience on Asia trade, innovation, and intellectual property policy issues through on-the-job experience. This is a paid, temporary (5- month) position located in NBR's Washington, D.C. office. NBR utilizes a hybrid work schedule, and the intern will split time between working in the office and working remotely. Preference will be given to candidates who are available to work January 2022 through May 2022, and are available at least 20 hours per week (up to 32 hours/week). The Intern will be supervised by the Project Manager, Center for Innovation, Trade, and Strategy.


  • Research Assistance: providing substantive research assistance for Trade Center projects and scholars. This may include projects on digital trade and data governance in the Indo-Pacific, the impact of emerging technologies on regional relations, U.S.-Japan economic and trade relations, China's impact on Indo-Pacific trade strategies, or other related topics.
  • Writing Assistance: drafting and proofreading concept papers, funding proposals, memos, grant reports, briefing papers, etc.
  • Publications Support: editing, reviewing, fact-checking, proof-reading, and formatting project publications, including commentaries, essays, reports, and analyses
  • Event Planning: providing administrative support for conferences, workshops, presentations, and briefings (including drafting agendas, assisting with travel, accommodation, and venue arrangements, sending and responding to invitations, note-taking, managing logistical flow, etc).
  • Administrative Support and Database Administration: drafting and managing independent contractor agreements for external project experts, submitting invoices and receipts through the online financial management system, and supporting other NBR activities as needed.


  • Current undergraduate or graduate student or recent graduate, preferably in Asia studies, international relations, politics, business, public policy, or related field
  • Demonstration of strong writing skills
  • Some professional experience with research, writing, event planning, or other responsibilities listed above preferred
  • Knowledge of and interest in U.S. trade, economics, technology, intellectual property, or foreign policy, especially pertaining to Asia
  • Advanced Asian language skills a plus, particularly Chinese, Korean, or Japanese
