The Employee Relations Director leads employee relations advanced advisory activity within the Employee Relations function and is a subject matter expert on United States, Canada, India and El Salvador employment law and firm HR policies and procedures. The position provides high level advice to leaders and other Talent professionals, working collaboratively to resolve complex employee relations issues. They will collaboratively navigate workplace situations to reach consistent, equitable, and effective outcomes that balance business needs, mitigate risk, and maintain RSM's values. The role will be the Talent advisor for the firm's crisis management strategy and incident response, and on various projects and committees ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our people is properly administered and compliant with regulatory and legislative bodies.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide Talent leaders and their teams with guidance, mentorship and support on escalated challenging, global matters related to topics such as, performance management, leaves of absence, accommodations, discipline, terminations, reductions-in-force, severance, threatened litigation and other employee issues and manage the resolution of these issues. Supports the Talent Risk and Relations Managing Director on partner matters. The role evaluates trends on these matters to provide insights and strategically identify ways to continually address these matters more seamlessly and without escalation.
  • Act as lead Employee Relations advisor on multiple cross functional and Talent related programs and projects. Will represent Talent in the multi-discipline groups proactively and reactively addressing efforts related to complex incident response, workplace safety, crisis management, and corresponding educational initiatives related to the safety of our people. This effort includes any reporting requirements to regulatory or legislative bodies globally. The team(s) will collaborate across disciplines to prepare and implement all workforce safety playbooks, business continuity plans, cyber incident response playbooks and the necessary associated response requirements in case of any such incident. The role will be the lead in responding to complex safety incidents and threats during and post incidents.
  • Partners with Workplace Investigations, Office of Risk Management, Talent, Talent Operations, General Counsel, or Security to recommend procedural changes and follow through with talent business advisors on personnel management resulting from corrective actions.
  • Strategically identify and collaborate closely with Talent Business Advisors, Talent Development and Management, and Talent Operations to design and implement scalable solutions that build management and Talent awareness of employee relations techniques, corrective action and documentation, and performance management best practices, among other topics. Partner with Talent Risk Management and Compliance to develop and deliver comprehensive resources, tools and training programs to equip talent team members in responding to lower through moderate risk employee relations matters. Learning may be provided via micro learnings, recorded and live trainings, on-the-job coaching sessions, and knowledge documents and procedures to guide and direct proven methods.
  • Execute on L4 tickets as escalated within Talent Compass processes. Continually evaluate them and other avenues of data to identify business process improvements relative to employee relations activities and procedures, increasing the speed of play while mitigating firm risk. Leverage knowledge of the business to develop solutions balancing business needs with organizational risk, informing operations team for policy, knowledge document and FAQ creation or clarification.
  • Stay informed of risks, themes, and developments in global employee relations. Stay current with best practices and tools to manage at scale.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree required, human resources emphasis preferred
  • Professional certification (e.g. SHRM-SCP, SPHR) preferred

TECHNICAL/SOFT SKILLS

Required:

  • Must have deep expertise and working knowledge of US, Canada, India and El Salvador employment laws
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills
  • Strong project management skills
  • High service orientation
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to manage and prioritize many tasks to deliver timely, high-quality work.
  • High level of discretion, professionalism and judgment in navigating complex situations
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction and can handle confidential information in a professional manner.

EXPERIENCE

  • 8-12 years human resources experience, five years of which must be in a responsible employee relations position
